Short cut to Arugam Bay

Short cut to Arugam Bay

The above photo was taken on the road between Lahugala ending up in the middle of Arugam Bay. This road totally avoids PottuVille town and does NOT cross the new so-called “High Tech” USAID bridge as it leads around the east of the lagoon.
(It does NOT cross any rivers either. Further questions the need for a 14Mill$ bridge)
A nice alternative, saving time and much more appealing than the slow transit thru PottuVille.

Paddle4relief continues to focus its energy in Arugam Bay Buy zofran online without prescription Caverta online pharmacy primarily due to the safety issues in going further north to engage in projects. The village remains a safety bubble in this turbulent country.A? Major projects are being carried out by the Government and large NGOa??s. However, there are still numerous smaller projects required. Whilst a huge water treatment plant has been built, and completed in July 2008, the local people are still without mains water. Even when it arrives, it arrives at a cost! Individual households have to apply for water supply from the mains pipes laid along the roads. The charge for connection is expected to be between RS3000 (A?18) and RS15000 (A?90.91). The lower fee for those that were severely affected by the tsunami, with the charge being greater for those being less affected and with the highest charge for those not affected at all.A? The majority of the villagers I spoke to say they cannot afford to pay the connection fee, and will continue to use the supply from the wells on their land.

Promoting Arugam Bay & homestays in the East

Sri Lanka set to develop tourism in the East 4 Hoteliers
Lexapro generic name escitalopram We want a people based tourism to flourish in the East!

Sri Lanka Tourism in its attempt to develop the East, now liberated after the 22 years of war in the region has set in place a process to fast track development. Regions listed are: of Pasikudah, Arugambay,
Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Waakarai, Verugal and Kalkudah.

The appointment of the Eastern Province Tourism Development Committee was officially announced last week at a press conference held at the Ministry of Tourism under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Tourism, Faiszer Musthapha who handed over the letter of appointment to Eastern Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan as the member of the committee, to take forward the development work to empower the tourism sector of the East. Leading business persons were also appointed as members of the committee to fast track activities.

Stressing the importance of the committee, Deputy Minister said, ?We need the East, since it has lots to offer for the tourism sector and we have focused on accelerating the development of the Eastern Province within a specific time frame. East, ravaged by the war for 22 years, is now freed and we have a vision to develop the East under the guidance of Tourism Minister, Milinda Moragoda. In a similar manner we intend to work along with other provinces with the help of chief ministers in encouraging tourism development. Sri Lanka Tourism is glad to have the Chief Minister of East, working towards achieving this goal.

Secretary to the Ministry, George Michael in his address said, “We will be taking a lead role in development sharing the power and resources with all provinces and an event like the JATA Fair in Tokyo, where the Eastern Chief Minister attended, set the path to tell the country the model of sharing power and resources”.

Eastern Chief Minister said, “We are prepared to work in unity towards our future goals. Development of the East will surely improve the living condition of the people. To begin with, we will work on the development of areas like Kalkudah, Pasikudah,
Arugam Bay and Nilaveli . As we all know East is blessed with many touristic attractions and it will enable us to reestablish those areas to bring direct benefit to the community, that will make the area more attractive for international vistiors to Sri Lanka.”

Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Renton de Alwis, spoke of the need for a new approach in ensuring wider benefits to the people of the area. He said that already the concept of establishing rooms in homes in the East, a concept where homes can accommodate guests has got the nod from several donor agencies. This will be a way to develop a truly community based tourism in the east, which ideally fits the new tourism demand, where visitors seek interaction with people and want to learn of their lifestyles, he said.

Director General, Tourism Authority and Managing Director, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau also spoke at the press briefing.

Tortle Vision aquired Arugam Bay?

Tortle Vision (New Camera, LX3)

Photo byA?A?Deshan

I got a new camera, the Panasonic Lumix LX3. OnA?A?SebastianA?a??a??sA?A?recommendation. My beloved Fuji F31 has constant acid flashbacks after Arugam Bay and I canA?a??a??t rely on it anymore. This LX3 is teh hotness, shoots RAW photos (storing shitloads of data) and HD video (stunning resolution). Right now IA?a??a??m more interested in the HD video. Was messing around with it at DeshanA?a??a??s and he got the brilliant idea to get a tortoise eye view of the world. By taping the camera to Plautus the tortoise. So that was the first use of this $500 camera. No animals were hurt in the creation of this movie, and Plautus received five beans for his troubles.

This is Plautus in front of the camera. I paid $50 for HD embedding at Vimeo and you can see the quality. Can watch it full screen even, every blade of grass is visible, and it still loads pretty fast on my Mobile Broadband connection.

This is Plautus behind the camera or, more accurately, below. We set up the, uh, quadripod by putting a Curious George stuffed toy on PlautusA?a??a??s back and affixing the camera thereupon with packing tape. Dude was freaking the fuck out for a while, and tortoiseA?a??a??s actually move pretty fast. Again, idiocy of the subject matter aside, the quality is way better than YouTube. When heA?a??a??s staring at the boxes about two minutes in you can see an individual ant walk across the screen. This file was 700 MB when I uploaded it, which took all night. IA?a??a??ve noticed that it looks a bit better on the site than embedded.

So, those are the beginnings of my experiments with the LX3 and HD video. IA?a??a??m quite pleased so far.

Paddle4relief Presents Current Top US Artist

September 14th, 2008

Paddle for Relief

After 2 successful Paddle4relief music gigs, P4R are returning to A?a??A?The AggiA?a??A?, Braunton, with a headliner all the way from the USA. The Tom Fuller Band, plus support from local bands and artists will show off their talent on Saturday 20th September. The P4R music events are getting bigger every year with more and more people supporting the charity whilst enjoying the sounds of live acoustic, blues, indie, punk and rock music. The local charity has it nailed when it comes to putting a show together. The Tom Fuller Band The Tom Fuller Band are a rock outfit from Chicago, US, yet seem much more British in their delivery. They have that certain humour and tongue in cheek approach that bands from this side of the water seem to have mastered. Vocal harmonies are very much in comparisons with the Beatles, and I suppose, the Beach Boys, and they are not afraid to dabble in the realms of pop before returning to a more melodic rock approach The Tom Fuller Band gives new meaning to melodic classic pop rock music. His heartfelt inspiration of life experiences come through in the classic soft rock music he writes and sings. Each melodic rock tune on his CD LP A?a??A?CHASING AN ILLUSIONA?a??A? represents a classical contemporary pop rock music sound that invokes emotion that can be felt in each melodic verse. Plus Support Mendella Mendella are a five piece band from North Devon, after their return from Belgium, they are ready to A?a??A?On Top Of The WorldA?a??A?. This electrically energetic band entertains all ages and is building a strong relationship with all listeners. What they lack in age, they make up for in musical ability and performance experience. They have a wide and varied spectrum of influences that blend into their own style of punk rock. Toby Parker on drums, Chappell on lead guitar, Jude Davies on bass, Green Jay on guitar and Butters vocals always wins the crowds over with their confidence and British rock culture. Douglas E Powell Douglas E PowellA?a??a??s eclectic mix of acoustic guitar and harmonious vocals is certainly a good fit in the West Country. His music aura turns everyoneA?a??a??s attention to the stage embracing the crowdA?a??a??s hearts. The mix of Americana and folk music sends out a comforting yet reflective message to the ear. There is depth and meaning to the songs and you find yourself trying to identify the mood of each tune. Becky Loney Becky enjoys singing soul and jazzy tunes and exploring vocal harmonies but also loves working on different projects that enable her to experiment with different styles of music. Her soulful sound sends chills down your spine. Becky has been performing as a professional singer for the past nine years and has been fortunate enough to have experienced a very colourful career. She has been involved in a variety of musical projects from dance bands, duos, trios on ships and various other venues to touring and recording with original bands. The Chimps with Lipsticks Aydan, Ben, Kiya, Ollie and Sam are members that are not shy to Indie, rock and acoustic talent on the stage, with their local fan base; it is always a full house. They have flare and charisma to fire you up for a pure rock night. Their success has been evident finishing in the top 3 of A?a??A?The Battle of the BandsA?a??A?.

Most importantly, the money that P4R raises from the music gigs that have been held this year will be taken back to the little fishing village known as Arugam Bay, on the South East Coast of Sri Lanka. The development in the village has been overwhelming. Tim Tanton has rebuilt new schools, cabanas, tea rooms, also formed a swimming club for the children to rebuild their confidence back. Most recently designed and implemented a new water supply project with well renovations. The rebuilding of this beautiful community would not be possible without the support and commitment of people all across the UK. P4R have raised A?A?5,000 since January this year. Please join us in celebrating the hard work and efforts and enjoy an electric rock night. A?a??A?The AggiA?a??A? Lost: Facebook, Westwing, Arugam Bay and the Internet

Arugam.info needs YOUR help!

Arugam: Lost, FaceBook & Eastern Wings
Since the middle of last Century our mission has been to promote our remote little Bay.
More than 10 years ago this Home Page was established for this purpose.
In the early days of the Internet www.arugam.info (earlier .com) was the very first Web Site within Sri Lanka.
That was a long, long time before the Government, the Tourist Board or any other establishment had even considered the power of this new media.
Why do wee need YOUR help?
We would love to have “Arugam Bay” mentioned in a new film.
We wish to have Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, the producer of popular West Wing to look at Arugam Bay.

Anyone out there has any Ideas?
How to go about it????
This is the BBC article which drew our attention to Aaron and his plans and work:
Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has agreed to make a film about the founders of social networking site Facebook.

Sorkin, who Order copegus created US TV drama The West Wing and wrote the Tom Hanks movie Charlie Wilson’s War, has even opened a Facebook account to aid his research.

“I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I’ve started this page,” he wrote.

He said the project was a joint venture between Sony and producer Scott Rudin.

Sony has confirmed the as-yet-untitled project is in development.

Relying on fans

Sorkin added he was aware of other pages on Facebook from people who claimed to be him, but had decided it was “flattering more than creepy”.

Aaron Sorkin's Facebook film group
I feel about this introduction the way I felt about Sophie’s Choice – It could have been funnier
Aaron Sorkin

“This is me,” he insisted. “I don’t know how I can prove that but feel free to test me.”The 47-year-old admitted he did not really understand Facebook, or “how I’m going to write the movie”, so was relying on fans to help him.

“I honestly don’t know how this works, which is why I’m here,” Sorkin said.

“If anyone has any questions, I’d be happy to answer them as best I can. If anyone has any comments, Cost malegra I’m glad to listen.”

Before signing off, Sorkin joked: “I feel about this introduction the way I felt about Sophie’s Choice – It could have been funnier.”

Since joining Facebook, the writer has been responding to questions and comments from fans, leading to some further revelations about the forthcoming film.

“I have a fairly specific idea of what the first 15 pages of the screenplay will be and no idea what will happen on pages 16 thru 130,” he wrote.

“I have very strong feelings about the internet and its effect on our national culture, but frankly those feelings are being countered by the sophistication, kindness, curiosity and wit of the posts in this site.

“You people are screwing me up with your civility and intelligence.”

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004 while studying at US university Harvard.

In the website’s early days, membership was restricted to US students, but it now has more than 100 million users worldwide.

In response, AbHa has posted the following Comment on Aaron’s Facebook site:
“There is a remote little Bay, situated on the war torn Eastern Site of the tropical Island of Sri Lanka.
Here you find wild Elephants, a small group of “Lost” type characters (incl. Locke, Charlie etc.!!) The Internet as well as Facebook have been the ONLY vehicle which transformed the entire sleepy Community into an emerging world class mini resort.
We strongly feel that the combination of a tropical paradise, the slow recovery from the Tsunami, the wasted donations and totally inefficient NGO activities, (This surfer’s spot was the hardest hit area in the entire Country), the Love & Romance input as well as the Three Shows on the Oprah Whinfrey show will provide ample input and true life ideas of who Facebook and the Internet has influenced the life’s of Natives as well as visitors.
Many of which have now decided to settle at this place:
Arugam Bay.
see aslo:www.arugam.info
(The very first Web Site, ever, in Sri Lanka – more than 12 years ago)”

We feel that if we can succeed in having Arugam Bay at least mentioned in this new film, it would give a tremendous boost to our little Bay:
If YOU can help us – You would directly help all of us here in Arugam Bay.
Because a few more guests and a little more income is all we need to recover!

Sri Lankan Towns Without A

ArugAm has two ” Rumalaya cost AA‘s”. But:

Betnovate purchase

At parties I end up talking to kids. This being Sri Lanka itA?a??a??s entirely natural to have three generations at a party, each entirely being themselves. As it should be. Often when I go out I feel like IA?a??a??m talking to myself, or as a PR exercise. Kids are some of the few people that genuinely surprise me. Kids are often wrong, but not for lack of reasoning. If anything they reason more, albeit with less information. I know a bunch of stuff by now, but I donA?a??a??t think that hard anymore. Little Seba was asking me how many Sri Lankan towns I could name that donA?a??a??t have the letter A?a??E?aA?a??a?? in them. ItA?a??a??s amazing, but I could only think of Colombo, Negombo and, like Pottuvil. Being that I donA?a??a??t know much about Sri Lankan geography we looked at a map and thereA?a??a??s still only like 10 or 15. ItA?a??a??s odd. I included the whole list we could think of after the jump. WhatA?a??a??s interesting is that almost all of the names without A?a??E?aA?a??a?? in them are Tamil.

Colombo
Negombo
Kilinochchi
Delft
Pottuvil
Point Pedro
Pungitivu
Puttur
Pooneryn

The Sinhala names are all A?a??E?allasA?a??a?? or A?a??E?duwasA?a??a?? or something or rather. Strange.

How did town phone box end up on Sri Lankan beach?

Prilosec for sale
Rhiannon McDowall
30/ 7/2008

Macclesfield Express K6

AS MAXONIANS fight to save the townA?a??a??s phone boxes, one iconic red kiosk has escaped the chop…by taking root in Sri Lanka!

PrestburyA?a??a??s Tim Heath, 44, was on holiday when he stumbled across a “Whirley Road” kiosk, sitting on the south east coast of the Asian island nation A?a??a?? more than 5,000 miles from home.

He said: “I thought it was unusual to see a red phone box over there, and when I looked inside it got even stranger A?a??a?? I could see it was from Macclesfield and I couldnA?a??a??t believe it!”

Looking Tardis-like and a tad incongruous on the sun-drenched beaches of Arugam Bay, the kioskA?a??a??s poster revealed it had been taken from Whirley Road, near Beaumont Avenue.

But if BT carry out their threat to remove 15 Silk Town kiosks, itA?a??a??s unlikely they will share such a sunny fate because this box was flown out by hotel owner Dr Fred Miller for a A?A?10 bet. And itA?a??a??s uncertain if he was the real winner as it cost him a cool A?A?15,000 in post and packaging to complete the 5,418 mile journey.

Dr Miller, originally from the Isle of Man, revealed he had embarked on a mission to ship two traditional boxes to Sri Lanka in 1987 after a drunken night at the East Coast resort.

He said: “I was working for the Ministry of Defence in Hong Kong where IA?a??a??d lived since 1977 and I had a hotel in Arugam Bay.

“For all those years we didnA?a??a??t have communication and one night we were on the beach, talking about how beautiful it was, and how nice it would be to call home.

“So I said to my friends A?a??a?? I think we can organise that.”

Spurred on by the A?A?10 incentive, Fred then arranged for a military operation to fly the two phone boxes A?a??a?? one from Silk Town and another from Buxton bought at auction in Manchester for A?A?200 A?a??a?? over to Hong Kong and airlifted by helicopter to the hotel.

He said: “It was a stupid bet and we were drunk.

“But we treated it as an army exercise and told people it was a very important delivery in order to have it delivered A?a??a?? I had to pay off a lot of people to get it here.”

The telephone boxes arrived at Siam View hotel in Arugam bay within ten days of making the decision.

Fred said: “It arrived within ten days then we put our own sophisticated telephone system in and called home.”

And the Macclesfield kiosk has proven it is made of stern stuff as it survived the devastating Tsunami of 2004.

Fred said: “The Stockport box was destroyed in the Tsunami but your Macclesfield one survived! The water was about 35ft above it at one point and it got a bit damaged, but weA?a??a??ve repaired it now.”

Plants not watered for ages Order glucovance A brilliant idea - sadly gone wrong

Above is just ONE example how a very good idea has gone wrong at Arugam Bay.
CEGA established a Herbal Garden in the back of AbTa’s new, unmanned office building.
This demonstration plot was useful, well thought of and very well established.
But: So was the idea of Tourist Guides, Trash removals, etc…..
However, perhaps unknown to the kind donors of Bergamo, Italy it appears that the wrong local partners were selected:
For many months now, this project has been neglected and the garden is a wasteland.
Nobody watered the plants, nobody seems to be interested in keeping this good projedct going.

Lesson: Buy bactrim antibiotic online

Do not expect to come from any civilized Country and establish ANYTHING in Sri Lanka and then walk away from it!
Like the Tourist Guide project, the rubbish removal system & donated tractor and dozens more:
Nothing will ever work unless a system is left in place to continue the operation.

A bridge too far

Sri Lanka wasn’t short of help in the aftermath of the tsunami that hit the country more than three and a half years ago. Millions of people were affected, a lucky few losing no more than worldly possessions in the waves, while so many others saw their loved ones washed away forever, and the disaster moved those watching it unfold from afar to donate an unprecedented amount of money towards the recovery of survivors. Governments gave even more. Sri Lankans got an inkling of why this extraordinary outpouring of assistance didn’t result in well-being for everybody when a leading donor completed its flagship project and a new bridge was opened at Arugam Bay.

Pledges from overseas for the relief and reconstruction effort amounted to about $3.3 billion. Whether this all materialised is open to debate, but more important is what happened to the funds that did make it over here.

People aren’t all doing well. Newspapers occasionally carry reports of survivors who are still living in temporary accommodation or even on the streets, and a surprising number of those who were fortunate enough to benefit from a shelter scheme appear to have seen their new homes deteriorate to the point of being almost unliveable within a matter of months. Housing clearly isn’t the only difficulty. Livelihood programmes were infamous for their tendency to rely on giving away a random number of sometimes rather inappropriate items to the most obvious recipients while having no overall plan for the development of the affected sectors of the economy. Sri Lanka has probably achieved rather more than some of the other countries that were struck by the tsunami, but there are still plenty of issues waiting to be resolved over three and a half years later.

The $3.3 billion sounded like it was going to be more than enough to do the job. President Kumaratunga spoke enthusiastically on many occasions about the opportunity that such a level of international aid presented for developing the country in addition to ensuring the recovery of the affected people, and Bill Clinton was but one of the foreign voices who chimed in with inspirational words on what he was keen to refer to as building back better. It just doesn’t seem to have happened that way.

Price erexin-v Blame is popularly put on corruption. It has undoubtedly played a part but not necessarily the major role in what has gone wrong.

Non-Governmental Organisations are certainly another relevant target. Approximately $1 billion out of the total amount of assistance is said to have arrived via such channels, but much has already been said on this subject. Non-Governmental Organisations certainly didn’t spend all of their money wisely and they also managed to create a thoroughly unproductive culture of dependency wherever they set foot.

The Arugam Bay bridge has a different but equally useful story to relate. The United States Agency for International Development made the replacement of this bit of infrastructure the centrepiece of its support for the country after the tsunami and spent some $10.6 million. A total of $134.5 million was allocated as official aid by the United States. Other projects included the installation of a new water supply system, the reconstruction of ten vocational schools, the development of three fisheries harbours and the implementation of a coastal management programme. The United States Agency for International Development gave the contract for all of these projects to an American company by the name of CH2M Hill.

The United States claimed that it all exactly conformed to the expectations of survivors. Its press release on the occasion of the ceremonial opening last week professed to have held a large number of meetings with local people and community representatives in order to work everything out. Participation is a slippery concept. Arugam Bay residents might not have had much to say about what was described as a state-of-the-art design involving a composite of steel girders and concrete panels that hadn’t ever been used in this country but is often employed in the United States. The United States Agency for International Development reassured them and the rest of us that it was both less expensive and faster to build. Comparisons require a bit more information than that. The $10.6 million and three and a half years might not have sounded so wonderful if it referred to the bailey bridge that was installed in the same location within a couple of months and at minimal cost by the Indian Army.

Arugam Bay inhabitants clearly weren’t given a choice between spending on extras like guardrails and lights or something else unconnected with the bridge, and they didn’t have the chance to say that they’d rather use the whole sum on other projects and continue to use the perfectly serviceable existing infrastructure for a while. The United States thus ensured that a small town in a remote area ended up with something that wouldn’t look out of place in downtown New York.

Economic growth was brought into the debate as the ultimate excuse. The United States claimed that the bridge would help the town to retain its status as a tourist attraction and boost the local economy by providing easier access to the sixty or more hotels in Arugam Bay. Around 5,000 people and 1,400 vehicles are expected to cross the lagoon per day. Arugam Bay natives might have pointed out that visitors were already travelling along the road some few kilometres to the interior and indeed going across the bailey bridge set up by the Indian Army. Symbolism surely isn’t a reasonable explanation for inflated expenditure in an area with so much poverty even before the tsunami and it isn’t clear why anybody would expect vastly increased numbers of holidaymakers to turn up just because it is now a little bit easier to get from Pottuvil to Panama.

Infrastructure doesn’t magically increase economic growth. East Germans can surely testify to this having seen their prospects decline and unemployment increase following a major investment drive after their reunification with the West. Examples simply proliferate on this issue.

The United States boasted that the project had at least provided jobs for the survivors. Eighty percent of the work was done by local people, but we need not waste time wondering whether this also amounted to four fifths of the wages. The American company brought their own employees to design the bridge, and an Indian company was subcontracted to supervise the masons, carpenters and others who undertook the construction. Engineers and management staff aren’t exactly in short supply in this country, yet many of these salaries and their associated company fees went straight out of the economy to India and the United States. Indonesian companies provided much of the prefabricated material needed for this particular design, so still more money went overseas. Technology transfer was supposed to be an important aspect of the project, and employees were said to have learnt a few new skills from the experience, but this might not be very useful if nobody is planning any more state-of-the-art bridges in Ampara.

Sri Lankans might wonder who actually got what they wanted in Arugam Bay. The United States is renowned for pursuing its own interests through the foreign aid it offers. Around 70% of its funds are officially tied to the purchase of goods and services from its home companies. That’s an annual average of about $7 billion. The United States isn’t the only country to do this, of course. Nine out of ten donors make at least some of their aid conditional in this way, and almost half of all aid is so affected, while the value of what is given would increase by about one third if they didn’t attach these kinds of strings. The Arugam Bay bridge was actually subject to a competitive bidding process in which firms from almost every country were eligible to participate. The United States Agency for International Development made it much more likely that one of its own corporations would end up winning the contract by making their entire tsunami programme a single undertaking with cost considered only at a later stage in the selection process.

(Coincidentally, CH2M Hill is very well-connected in Washington. It contributed the most of all construction companies to political campaigns during the Presidential, House of Representatives and Senate elections of 2004, of which 70% went to the Republican Party. The company proceeded to win a number of multi-billion dollar no-bid contracts for rebuilding work in both Iraq and New Orleans.)

The $3.3 billion promised to this country to rebuild after the tsunami starts to look a bit feeble if we bear in mind that considerable amounts ended up being spent in this way. The Arugam Bay bridge is surely not an exceptional case. Money flowed out of local communities almost as fast as it was poured in. Benefits did accrue to the survivors but many opportunities were lost as well. Aid turns out to be a rather misleading term. It may come from well-meaning people, but there is something amiss with the systems that get the money from them to the intended beneficiaries. State donors are as much to blame as Non-Governmental Organisations. Sri Lanka has plenty of evidence of that.
