* Sri Lanka government says IIGEP’s decision hasty

Mar 08, Colombo: The decision taken by the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) to wrap up their operations at the end of this month is hasty and regrettable, Sri Lankan government said.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights issuing statement said the haste with which this decision was taken, especially when inquiries on two important investigations are ongoing is regrettable.

IIGEP had been invited by the Sri Lankan President to observe the proceedings of the national Commission of Inquiry into recent human rights violations, to offer suggestions, and to assess the conduct of these proceedings against international norms and standards.

The investigations into the deaths of 17 aid workers of Action Against Hunger and the killing of 5 youths in Trincomalee are currently undertaken by the IIGEP while another investigation into the killing of 10 Muslim civilians in Pottuvil is to commence shortly. The Ministry also accused the IIGEP of releasing its public statements to coincide with the Human rights Council meetings in Geneva.

The groupA?A?A?s decision came on the heels of another report by Human Rights Watch holding the Sri Lankan government responsible for widespread abductions in the country and urging for a international human rights monitoring mission.
