History:
It is believed to be the only guitar which has survived the onslaught of the devastating Tsunami, which hit Arugam Bay with full force end 2004.
Locals say it belonged to a famous person who died at #01 Stardust, Arugam Bay on 26th December, 2004
His body was never found, although a huge sum was spent to locate him by the Oprah Winfrey show. Arugam.info reported at the time, when US Marines came to search for his body. (And totally ignored the plight of the suffering locals) Continue reading ‘The Arugam Stratocaster Story’

Security update

National and International News are buzzing with reports that the STF have found a group suspected of attacks, mainly around Buttala and south of Panama.
Locally, however, a STB bus accident with an equal loss of life at the 10 mile post would have caused more talking points, concern and disruption to the public at large.
Arugam.info is happy to assure everyone that at NO point security to the public, visitors and travelers was endangered.
Indeed, a team from SunTel arrived in the Bay on Friday morning, and they left via Lahugala in their van towards Colombo later that day.
They did not notice anything at all!
Read more, see the local news as we see it: From the Internet. Beware of the photos.

As long promised, Arugam.info is committed to report and publish ALL security related incidents concerning our region.
This particular case was first shown in the BBC link on this very web site (here, below) within a few hours of the event taking place. BBC news are automatically updated (below) every few minutes.

Short cut to Arugam Bay

Short cut to Arugam Bay

The above photo was taken on the road between Lahugala ending up in the middle of Arugam Bay. This road totally avoids PottuVille town and does NOT cross the new so-called “High Tech” USAID bridge as it leads around the east of the lagoon.
(It does NOT cross any rivers either. Further questions the need for a 14Mill$ bridge)
A nice alternative, saving time and much more appealing than the slow transit thru PottuVille.

#70 Surf Point Cafe

#70 Upali’s Surf Cafe is the nearest place to famous Surf Point.

#70 Upali Surf Point Cafe

Right behind a huge sand dune, looking across to the Northern End of Arugam Bay.
This great place is more a way of life, than a commercial enterprise.

It certainly is situated right as a jewel in the crown of Arugam Bay; right on the tip of the peninsular.

A brief background:

This small family run Cafe offers not much more than a few local drinks, like milk tea, fruit juices and the odd Jaffle.
There is no accommodation to speak of, the first and proper shower, outdoors, is nearing completion late 2008 – after years of ‘Construction’.
Not so easy, as it may seem: There is no electricity installed so far.
And the few donated generators and not present, for whatever reasons.

There are two main characters associated with #70, and that is certainly what they are:

1.) Mr. “V.J.”
Known for his distinctive way of expression and his Super motorbike
2.) Mr. Richard
Known to be an excellent masseur. He has learned his skill from a Japanese friend it is said

Brief History:
A family run business, on the same spot for many years.
There is a sad story from long time ago associated with #70 Surf Cafe; the case remains open
More recently, the Forrest Department as well as the CCD (Coast Conservation Dept.) have planted some markers around this prime spot. Suspicions run high that authorities are planning a sort of top class hotel nearby…….

About Arugam Pullu(the Green Grass)

(See reason for this “error” post below)

How the green grass (Arugam pullu) became the favourite of Lord Ganesha

plganesh.JPG

Here is a story which tells us the importance of green grass.Once there was a kingdom called Mithilapuri. The King Janakamaharajan ruled the kingdom well.He used to feed the people whoever comes to him.But he had a bad nature that he never used to believe in God.
Lord Ganesha wanted to test the king.So he came in disguise of a poor Brahmin with lepersy disease all over his body in a very bad condition. The king saw the brahmin and asked his son to feed the brahmin. The brahmin was given lots of food ,but that was not sufficient to satisfy his hunger.
The King was not knowing how to please the Brahmin. So he told him politely to go to some other house where he could satisfy his hunger. So the Brahmin enters a poor man”s house and ask the couple there who were doing puja to give him food. The couple were feeling bad as they had nothing other than the green grass which they offered Lord Ganesha. The Brahmin asked them to give that to him as he chewed the grass his hunger disappeared.

The poor man and wife came to know that was Ganesha himself who came there. They got his vision.and were showered with wealth.Meanwhile the whole kingdom was becoming prosperous. The king came in search of the Brahmin and saw that was really Lord Ganesh who came to him to test him as he was not believing in God.Lord Ganesha told the king that to him even the green grass given with affection is more than enough than rich food. The king realeased his mistake and there after started believing in God.
Hi Ilanders this story is from Vinayaka pooranam.

Editorial by webmistress
(on behalf of AbHa and www.arugam.info)
The above story was actually found by our automatic netfinder system.
The funny symbols on your screen mean that you don’t have Hindi language installed on the machine – no sweat!
We translated it for you.
The word “Arugam” is -as far as we know- fairly unique in the word.

Therefore, we are lucky to get very few wrong messages, i.e articles, places or events which do not refer to ‘our’ Arugam, Bay.
However, we decided to leave this ‘error’ post in its pace, in the long achieves of the period 2004- today which we covered.

t>Many stories have never been read, because they never made the front page of Arugam.info.
To improve readership, and to make things easy for everyone, we installed an email button on the right hand side.
Whenever ANY article is written and posted on our site: You will get a summary into your mail box.
The above story from India was simply too good to ignore – although it has nothing to do with Arugam Bay.
…But has it???
Maybe there is a connection:
“Arugam”, Great Elephants, a Hindu god, the Green Bay and the Green Grass?
All o
n the beautiful East Coast of Sri Lanka, often mentioned as Tamil Home Land together with our island’s Northern parts.
What do you think?

Further remark:
www.arugam.info always wishes to stay out of any religion, but at time it’s nice to learn something of other believers.
For example, Lord Ganesha stands for:
“The God of knowledge and the remover of obstacles “
And no matter what we call him/it:
The Bay, as well as the Nation as a whole would certainly welcome any such person, specially in such troubled, war times…
