Fresh drinking water at Arugam Bay still presents a major problem, to this very day.
None of the educated (?) NGO’s, who claim to be “experts” in their chosen fields ever managed to came up with a true, ‘sustainable’ idea which actually worked.
In more than two years (after our Tsunami) .
Instead, they managed to waste millions of donor’s hard earned cash.

Arugam.info sees no real problem.
Forward thinking Thais, A?just 2,000 km due East of Arugam Bay, have long embraced popular reverse osmosis water dispensers.
Even in the USA some, unlike “Mercy Corpse” A?may have heard of it….:

Indeed, on every street corner in the Kingdom of Siam you will see residents refilling their PVC bottles and containers with fresh, clean, and fully trusted water.
A good contribution to the environment:
Every sane person should be concerned about PVC waste piling up and spoiling the environment! And this A?for ages, maybe even 500 years ahead. Continue reading ‘Cool Idea!’

Jaffna-Arugam-Kataragama

The first pilgrims of the traditional, annual “Walk on Foot” (‘Pada Yatra’)A? from Jaffna in the very North all the way to Kataragama in the deep South of our island have reached Arugam Bay today. As always, this colorful, happy, cheerful and peaceful event is mentioned on arugam.info.

Arugam’s “Monkey Man” has Died

In Memory of Herrn Wolfgang Heilman

Arugam.info has been informed that Wolfgang Heilman, known as “The Monkey Man” throughout Sri Lanka has died in Cameroon, Africa.

The report has so far not independently confirmed, but it is believed that he contracted Malaria and passed away as a result of his untreated condition.

The mainly uneducatedA? Arugam Bay Community never really understood him. His outstanding contribution as well as totally unselfish support for our remote Bay has never been noted by most.
Specially after the 2004 Tsunami, he gave up his German job, risked and lost his good relationship with his Thai wife.
And, within hours after the Boxing Day waves,A? he transformed this very web site into the world’s first, trueA? Community based Tsunami Self-Help Web Site.

A strong critic of affluent and wasteful and mainly totally uselessA? NGO’s (“Enjoy’s”) he concentrated later in helping endangered species, and with the support of AbHa and a few German donors an animal orphanage was established in the grounds of the Siam View at Arugam Bay.

Often totally misunderstood by greedy locals, who demanded cash for luxuries such as mobile phones and motorbikes, he turned away from human support inA? jealousy dominated Sri Lanka.

After trying his best to assist the island and preserve its outstanding wildlife and Nature, he received no support himself at all. Indeed, organizations shunned and obstructed his work. As a result, be moved to West Africa, where he continued to do what he loved best:

Arugam Bay a?? A Paradise for Surfers

….A also a paradise for party- and wild animals as well:
ARUGAM BAY !

Anyone crossing the bridge will realise immediately that Arugam Bay, if only because of its unique weather conditions, is an ideal holiday location. This particular corner of the island is protected from the west monsoon by the natural barrier of the mountain ridge around Monaragala and the great Pottuvil Lagoon acts just as effectively as a shield against the east monsoon. These factors working together explain why this particular region enjoys an average of 330 days of sunshine each year a?? something which will not be found anywhere else in Asia.

One of the 330 sunsets in a single year

The region is favoured with two major rivers and is therefore never in danger of becoming too arid.

These unusual geographic conditions together with the winds and currents around the coast were first discovered and recognised by surfers in the 1960s and the region quickly became one of the top ten most popular surfing venues in the world. From the end of March until the beginning of October and even for a few days in November, water temperatures range from between 24 and 28 degrees (no need for neoprene suits) and with waves reaching 5 metres the conditions are ideal for surfing. No sharks have ever been sighted in these waters, but occasionally wild elephants from the neighbouring national park have been observed in close proximity to the beaches.

After the discovery of the ideal a??right handa?? surf break at Surf Points, a number of other equally attractive surfing locations became popular.

Arugam Bay seems to work like a magnet and there are many visitors who come back year after year.

The last 30 years of bitter civil war have not stopped dedicated surfers from returning every year and it is this community that has kept the small coastal town alive.

Surfers and security forces were always good friends

The hippies of the past have now all gone a little grey and mutated to a respectable regular clientele, but they add in their own special way to the fascinating atmosphere of this place. These days, they still join in with about a thousand or so happy visitors who come to take part in the 48 hour Arugam Bay a??Full Moon Partiesa?? that provide a more spontaneous alternative to the now stage managed so-called a??Happeningsa?? in Koh Phangan or Goa.

Arugam's FMP revival

And who would be surprised to learn that, in spite of the worst Tsunami disaster on record, an International Surf Championship took place here in July 2005 with competitors from Australia, England, South Africa and Israel. Many locations now have shops specialising in providing equipment for water sports and a complete outfit can be hired for as little as 500 Rs per day.

It is not only the ocean that provides opportunities for surfing, you can also surf the internet and here you will find more discussion groups and visitor communities dealing with Arugam Bay than any other place in Sri Lanka. Some examples are: Continue reading ‘Arugam Bay a?? A Paradise for Surfers’

New Tools ….@ Arugam

Self-help is best

To our knowledge, Arugam.info was the first and perhaps only media which embraced new tools, such as this site, within hours of the 2004 Tsunami. Back then, we realized the wealth of options the internet can provide. Complimented by Twitter and Facebook, as well a s YouTube we tried to show that self help can be cheap.
No doubt it is best and also possible, as we managed to show.

some of Arugam's admins mid 2009

In our case communication from an area which had no power and no telephones it was more of a challenge than many of you, in developed places can imagine.
Various Generators, direct Inmarsat connections and many other innovations were needed and found.
This web site coordinated immediate self-help within days or even hours of the 2004 waves. And weA? continued our work to promote “Arugam Bay” ever since.
It is hoped that the local Community, for which this site was conceived, will soon understand the power of the net. And hopefully participate more in our approach.
In this context the article below has caught our attention.
We will continue to seek more avenues to drum up a bit of support and attention.
The “Best of British” award is one example – and this kind of promo is not only cheap, but free. We are in a continuous learning process. Thanks for being one of our readers!

Aid agencies ‘must use new tools’

By Jason Palmer
Science and technology reporter, BBC News

Ushahidi on mobile

Ushahidi is a free and open-source information-sharing platform

The “crowd-sourced” data that comes from victims of natural disasters and conflicts is now a crucial part in disaster management, says a new report.

The UN Foundation/Vodafone Foundation Partnership report outlines examples of new technologies that mitigate conflicts and save lives worldwide.

A report author said it reveals that aid agencies “fail to take advantage” of new tools available.

It says a number of challenges remain to maximise the tools’ potential.

The partnership is a $30m, 5-year plan that joins the humanitarian arms of each group, with a focus on the technological aspects of aid.

The new report outlines a number of technological tools that have already proven their worth, or could be put to better use. Continue reading ‘New Tools ….@ Arugam’
