I am going to Sri Lanka for 2-3 weeks in february.

I am a keen kitesurfer, so I will be bringing my gear.

I understand that february is not the time for surfing in A.Bay, but what about wind - is it windy?
Should I go to Hikkaduwa instead, and then if no wind I can instead surf?
What would you recommmend?

Best Regards
Martin!

Dear Anne,
Arugam Bay is actually always in season somehow.
The main Surf Season may be over. But surfers will be around.
But the weather is always good, the wild life unique, swimming is great and of course all the religious and historical places may still be around:
All have been around for a few 1,000 years so it's a fair bet that everything will still be around when you are planning to visit.

Jack, you can take longboards on the bus. This reply is probably too late for you...

I'm driving down tomorrow (01/06/2011) if anyone wants a lift, haha...

Hi,
Has anyone got any experience of windsurfing at Arugam Bay in July - August? What is the wind strength and direction at that time?
Thanks.

So far there are no direct designated tourist bus services from Colombo to Arugam Bay.
Public and private buses function, but none are (so far) air conditioned or indeed comfortable.
So it is a matter of talking to the individual driver / operator if and for how much they take your L.B. on board.
All approved taxi contractors, of course, have roof racks and every one is well equipped to carry any amount and size of board.
(otherwise this site would NOT add them to our trusted contractor's list!)

There usually are no good waves to surf at this time of year.
But swimming is OK during the low season.
Smaller guesthouses may be closed.
But be assured that there will be plenty of rooms available, at any time during winter.
A good New Year's Eve party always takes place at the Siam View Hotel.

Hi,
A couple of guys and myself want to visit Abha in June, most likely during the 2nd weekend. We're locals and have never visited the eastern coast, thought we should visit the bay first. Where do all the events take place? we want to visit during the peak season and meet people, we are hoping to party on a Saturday, whats the nightlife like? Would also like to know the rates of some of the better places for accommodation and a place to attend a party :D

Regards

hi brian,

i visit abay for the first time in april last year and was dissapointed. its actually a bit too early in the season - there is still rain and the place is not at its prime. i would recommend a visit in june/july when its amazing. i truly consider heaven.

yes, the fisherfolk still use some of the beach as a toilet. i know that the people are trying hard to change this. i know this issue is not there during the peak season - june, july, august, september etc.

anyway, do visit the place, even though swimming might be tough, there is tons you could do there. visit the ruines/national parks. good food. good company etc etc etc....surfing also is possible in april - i know, i did it :)
