  • Surfing Sam and his people are the worst type I’ve ever encountered. Firstly, their not surfers. Their pathetic wanna be womanizers. I had several female friends who were sexually (physically and verbally) harassed by these morons when they were taking surf lessons. Also they harass men too, saying that tourist men are not allowed to talk to tourist women and that all the tourist women are for them. This type of behavior is a trend throughout A Bay, but these losers are the worst. Don’t support them or their business.

  • I just have to say that in my whole 16 years of surfing I have never experienced such selfish behaviour in the water amongst one nationality in particular…the ISRALEI’S! Totally disgusting the way they steal waves and the way they have no concept of sharing. Even worse is when you have a group of them that bunch together and then any other nationality has no hope of getting any wave! They are totally rude and I have never been so disgusted EVER with people that call themselves surfers! Not only are they complete assholes but they are dangerous as well, riding over beginners and doing tricks on top of other surfers also no apologies whatsoever. No respect for others and quite frankly they should go piss off and surf in their own country if that’s how they want to behave and if they think that they are god’s gift to the surfing world! If that’s how they surf in Israel then keep it in Israel, surfing is about having fun and respecting fellow surfers and no matter where you are from this should be the minimum courtesy to follow in the water. It’s a real shame they are ruining Arugam Bay, Whiskey Point and Pottuvil Point for everyone else. Unfortunately I heard about their bad reputation before coming to Sri Lanka and I just didn’t believe it at all, however over the past week my opinion was changed very quickly (as a matter of fact in the first 2 days of being here). In all honesty the Israeli family’s are not the problem, they are lovely, it’s the younger men and even some women and the young guys that come on surf trips in a group whom are being super aggressive in the water! They need to go back to basics and learn surfing etiquette from the beginning because they obviously have absolutely no concept of it. I’m definite if they continue with this behaviour that the local surfers will sort them out! I’m hoping they will as some of them need a good slap because seriously they are just taking the piss out of fellow surfers and even the locals!!!Unfortunately the way I feel now is that I don’t think that I will come back to surf here for a long time if they are still in the water in the numbers they are, and from talking to many other surfers from various nationalities they agree 100% with me. I really hope the Arugam Bay Surf Club will take some kind of action against these people if they continue with this appalling behaviour. I know they have put up a sign on the beach in regards to surfing rules however they don’t seem to care and they are ignoring it. I think that unfortunately these people are giving a real bad reputation to this place and the people that will suffer will be the locals and their businesses in the long run. After talking with many locals they have informed me that this has been an ongoing problem for the past 3 – 4 years and some hotels will not even accommodate guests if they are Israeli due to their bad reputation. In Australia if any surfer carried on and behaved the way these people are behaving it would be dealt with straight away with fists on the beach! Its a real shame as Arugam bay has such nice energy however the energy in the water is definitely far from nice. From a real disappointed Aussie surfer chick. PS For those Israeli’s that respect the rules I’m truly sorry that your fellow countrymen have given you such a bad name and are behaving the way they are.

  • Hi All
Just a quick note to let you know whats happening in Arugam Bay. Ramani & Jagath from Siripala Surf Cafe have just been served a demolition order of their property. Siripalas has been there serving tourists since 1969. Ramani & her late husband Siripala started their place from humble beginnings from just minding surfers surfboards on their property from 5 rupees then to serving tea to eventually over time building 10 bungalow rooms.
Then the 2004 Tsunami hit. They lost everything, their home, bungalows, restaurant, belongings, friends, everything they had. They never recieved any funds or help from the Tsunami Appeal. The last 7 years they have scrapped together enough money to eventually build a restaurant & a couple of rustic basic rooms (limited funds). Basically their ability to make a living the last 7 years has been a ongoing struggle.
Now Sri Lanka has peace people want their land to build a park and road to Arugam Point. This will be the beginning OF THE END of Arugam bay as we know it. After 40 years Ramani has called this her home how can we sit back & watch this happen. One day this could happen to you or somebody you know at Abay. Everyone who knows Ramani & Jagath or ever stayed at Siripalas drop in n show them some support.
    Please let people know
    THEY NEED YOUR HELP NOW
