Managing Director of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Dileep Mudadeniya told Daily FT yesterday that two surf competitions will be held next month at Arugam Bay attracting 300 surf lovers.

“There will be a British Pro Surf competition in the first week of July and the next week will be dedicated to an international level surfing competition,” Mudadeniya said.

The British Pro Surfing Competition is set to attract 75 to 100 British nationals and the Five Star Surfing Championship will attract 200 persons from 15 to 20 countries. The Five Star Championship will be held from 18 to 25 July.

http://www.globalsurfers.com/Surfing/sri-lanka/arugam-bay-after-the-tsunami/msg21701/?PHPSESSID=cj640r

Hi Everybody!

I´d like to travell to Arugam Bay in August .
I know that the surf is as good as ever but I am worrying about the atmosphere in the town after the Tsunami. I am sure a lot of houses are getting rebuilt right now – so maybe it´s not a good place right now to have a relaxed hangout…!?! Has anybody of you guys been there lately?

Cheers, Marco

Making friends in Arugam Bay. Kitesurfing

The gamble paid off, but was there a gamble afterall, the winds are a sure thing during Vesak.
Beautiful conditions for Kitesurfing; sideshore wind, waves, scenery and nice blue skies.
The sessions were epic.
Was more fun with fellow kitesurferTom Ring in the scene all the way from England (or Dubai was it where there’s a bit more wind). Tom’s still there and we are sure to do a couple more sessions soon.
Enjoy the remainder of Arugam Bay Tom, envy envy!

Arugam’s surfers may get wildcards into 6 Star WQS..

ASP 6 Star WQS Men’s event
Arugam Bay Sri Lanka
18 – 24 June 2010

Sri Lankan surfers to get wildcards into

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 March, 2010 : – - The Surfing Sri Lanka movement recently created by the new Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka, received a major boost today when it was confirmed by the ASP that 2 local Sri Lankan surfers will benefit from wildcard entries into the first major Association of Surfing Professionals international tour event to ever be staged in the country’s history.

The 6 Star WQS Sri Lankan Airlines Pro to be held on Sri Lanka’s east coast at the world famous Arugam Bay between 18 – 24 June will now see some local surfers strutting their stuff amongst the world’s best contenders on the WQS circuit. Two Sri Lankan surfers will gain entry to the elite event as part of the ASP’s strategy to assist and promote local surfing at a variety of surfing locations worldwide.

It is proposed that the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event will be conducted the day prior to the main ASP event start in order to select 8 local surfers who will then surf-off in two x 4 man elimination heats. The first and second place-getters of each elimination heat will then advance to a “4 man mini final” on the first day of the WQS event to decide who will get the 2 wildcards on offer.

First and second place winners from the mini final will receive the 2 wildcards and enter the main event draw with all of the other international surfers there to contest the 6 Star Pro at A Bay. The Trials event is open to all male Sri Lankan surfers and registration for the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event will be conducted during the week of the WQS and the Surfing Federation’s first AGM at Arugam Bay.

Surfing Sri Lanka spokesman Peter Rob-o, is encouraging all surfers from around Sri Lanka to attend this very important week of ground-breaking surfing events to be staged at A Bay between 15 – 24 June. Surfing Sri Lanka (the marketing and promotional arm of the new Surfing Federation) will conduct the Trials event with the A Bay Surfing Club, long known for their ability to coordinate surfing activities on this coast.

Chairman of the A Bay Club, Fawas Lafeer, was ecstatic about the news and the recent developments made by Surfing Sri Lanka to get surfing organised and focused around the country for the first time.

The inclusion of two of Sri Lanka’s finest young surfers in the WQS Pro event is going to drive the performance levels higher than ever seen before and fuel the new resurgence of interest in Sri Lankan surfing.  Local A Bay surfers such as Sri Lanka’s number one competitive surfer Asanka, who has a guesthouse on the famous pointbreak and has grown up in these waves all of his life, must certainly loom as a threat to the international contingent of surfers.

Through Asanka’s sheer local knowledge of the break, he will definitely be one of the surfers to watch. Adjustment to the ASP scoring criteria perhaps his only real threat to a possible victory on home turf or perhaps one of the other A Bay locals fired up to impress may also stand in his way. Surfers such as local young gun Siril Pranith who has been charging lately or Milan or one of the many other A Bay local surfers.

A surprise could even be in store for the local Arugam surfers. The very strong surfing contingent from the south coast area of Hikkaduwa lead by local surfing identity Mambo Thushara and his brother Babaya or Gallamalli, will be there in force contesting the wildcard entries on offer from the ASP and thus continuing the age-old rivalry between these two powerhouse clubs of Sri Lankan surfing. Both clubs will be determined to show who is Top Dog at the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event.

One thing is for sure, when 18 – 24 June rolls around, the Arugam Bay area is going to really come to life when it hosts Surf Week on the Sapphire Isle and surfing in Sri Lanka will, by karma and destiny, never be the same again.

All enquiries about Surf Week, Surfing Sri Lanka’s AGM, the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event can be made at: surfingsrilanka@gmail.com   or by contacting the A Bay Surfing Club at: abay_surfers@yahoo.com

How the world knew Arugam Bay.

– Majority of the world, especially the West got to know about Arugam Bay, only after the 2004 tsunami.

Arugam Bay 'City' Centre and view to Main Surf Point

There was a moving episode on America’s most-popular talk show, the Oprah Winfrey Show where a tsunami survivor Nate Berkus was interviewed. The Chicago-based interior designer Nate Berkus related his story on television about his vacation going awry. He was relaxing at a beach cottage in Arugam Bay with his partner photographer Fernando Bengoechea, when the deadly tsunami struck. Even though Nate was spared, unfortunately, Fernando’s life wasn’t. Oh! How I long to head to Arugam Bay!

Kite Surf Sri Lanka writes, in his blog and on his web site:

Master Dilsiri in action

Been on this island for 28 years and have travelled a lot but Arugam Bay still remains the best and most exciting place on this island paradise.
Jungle beaches with amazing breaks, winds in the afternoon for some kitesurfing amongst the surfers, the crocodiles and ruines, nights under the stars and food….oh, how I long to head to Arugam Bay again.

Arugam Bay,
That’s where I want to be
Arugam Bay.
That’s where I want to stay

Kite Surfing. A great sport and play with elements and nature

Windsurfing Arugam Bay

Wind Surfing in Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka is blessed with the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, which lap the entire 1,585 kilometres of the coastline. This, together with the two seasonal monsoons that hit each side of the island at different times of the year, means that water sports such as Windsurfing can be indulged in at any time.

Windsurfing began in America sometime in the early 70s after the discovery that a mast located on a swivelling pivot could be used to steer a small sailing craft by using body weight instead of a rudder. The first boards made their way to Sri Lanka in the late 70s, when a group of Swedish holidaymakers decided to try to bring them along on vacation. After this more and more tourists started bringing boards, some of which were intentionally left behind. It was these boards that west coast locals used to learn the sport for themselves. Games to play at Arugam Bay

Kite Surfing

Keshini Hapugoda might be Sri Lanka’s first female kite surfer. The 28-year-old IT consultant loves to surf and dive, and kite surfing is her latest passion. A few weekends with an instructor in Negombo have helped her learn the basics of kite surfing and while she’s sticking to the shallows now, she’s hoping to head into deeper water soon.

Dilsiri Welikala is already comfortable out at sea. “It’s an amazing feeling, harnessing the power of the wind to propel yourself along,” he says. He talks of skimming along the water for hours at a time and of chance encounters with pods of dolphins. Though he needs a little help getting his 10 square metre kite up, once that’s done and the lines and harness are secured, he’s good to go.

“Your kite becomes like an airplane wing,” says Dilsiri, explaining that he controls the direction of his kite by changing the angle of his board. Kite surfers are slaves to the winds and will drive many hours to catch the right kind. As a result, this group has been all over the island, from Puttalam to Arugam Bay.
