Games to play at Arugam Bay

Kite Surfing

Keshini Hapugoda might be Sri Lanka’s first female kite surfer. The 28-year-old IT consultant loves to surf and dive, and kite surfing is her latest passion. A few weekends with an instructor in Negombo have helped her learn the basics of kite surfing and while she’s sticking to the shallows now, she’s hoping to head into deeper water soon.

Dilsiri Welikala is already comfortable out at sea. “It’s an amazing feeling, harnessing the power of the wind to propel yourself along,” he says. He talks of skimming along the water for hours at a time and of chance encounters with pods of dolphins. Though he needs a little help getting his 10 square metre kite up, once that’s done and the lines and harness are secured, he’s good to go.

“Your kite becomes like an airplane wing,” says Dilsiri, explaining that he controls the direction of his kite by changing the angle of his board. Kite surfers are slaves to the winds and will drive many hours to catch the right kind. As a result, this group has been all over the island, from Puttalam to Arugam Bay. Gold Coast copies AbaY reef break?

Ken Lambert

A different take on the reef is given by Gold Coast surfers who put the idea of a reef down to Ken Lambert a Gold Coast electrician who dreamed that it might be possible to create a break like Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka.

Ken had some diagrams drawn up and submitted them to Gold Coast Council in 1998. Continue reading ‘Gold Coast copies AbaY reef break?’

Cruise ship to Arugam Bay?

The Island Newspaper

The Island Newspaper

The long anticipated Tourism boom is yet to arrive after the end of the Civil War in Sri Lanka. While we wholeheartedly want tourism to succeed and contribute to the National Economy, I would like to draw the attention of the general public and the authorities to a much neglected aspect of the tourism industry.

The locals are denied Cruise ship voyages and Theme Park entertainment right here in Sri Lanka unless they can afford to visit places like Singapore or Malaysia. Continue reading ‘Cruise ship to Arugam Bay?’

Kataragama Kumana up to Pottuvil roadway link

Hatton National Bank

Hatton National Bank

Ramani KANGARAARACHCHI

The development of the North and East should be fast tracked along with the rest of the country to ensure that the benefits of the victory against the LTTE filter down to the people. The process should be reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction, Chairman Hatton National Bank (HNB) Rienzie Wijetilleke told Daily News Business.

He outlined certain proposals which can be implemented utilizing the internal resources which will yield quick results. “We don’t have to depend on foreign aid for everything as there are many ventures that the banks can support,” he said.

Extending a new roadway link along the southern coast beyond Kataragama along the coastline through the Yala sanctuary, Kumana up to Pottuvil (through/around Arugam Bay) and setting up small hamlets along that roadway with a planned program is very important. mini Quake at Arugam Bay

This morning a tiny earth tremor caused no damage at all, but some concern amongst the village people of Arugam Bay.

Tsunami Warning system Arugam Bay Hill

Tsunami Warning system Arugam Bay Hill

As usual, fears of another Tsunami surfaced. Some ran away into the opposite direction. Just as they did end of 2004, towards Lahugala.
Arugam.info still maintains a highly efficient Early Warning System. Due to our own strong Thai connections we receive very quick and first hand warnings directly from the world’s most advanced centre at Silom Road, Bangkok.
There was not a hint of danger – so our sirens were not activated.
However, we are also informed that a mast (see photo) has recently been erected on the hill overlooking the Bay. It is however not known to us if this system is active and tested so far.
Our own opinion:
The next real Tsunami will come! The question is: When?
The ONLY real answer is: Build Tsunami resistant structures.
Or construct low level dwellings well away from the sea as indicated by the Government 100 or 200 Meter zone, earlier.
Do NOT reconstruct low level, low quality buildings near the sea front! As this will endanger the life and security of residents and visitors in future.  For sure.

Arugam Bay Beachwear Show

Colombo Fashion Week completes another milestone in 2009March 07, 2009 (Sri Lanka)

ftv

Colombo Fashion Week, Sri Lanka’s annual fashion event gave ample proof of the direction its taking to become one of region’s important fashion theatre, by showcasing strong collections from emerging Sri Lankan designers.

Colombo Fashion week which started in 2003 with the key objective of uplifting the Sri Lankan fashion design industry through interaction, exposure and guidance to Sri Lankan designers, delivered on its annual objectives which were set as part of a five year plan. More than that what became evident in this year’s edition of CFW was the collaborative spirit of South Asian designers, coming together in a country which is fighting for peace and peaceful coexistence. Short cut to Arugam Bay

Short cut to Arugam Bay

The above photo was taken on the road between Lahugala ending up in the middle of Arugam Bay. This road totally avoids PottuVille town and does NOT cross the new so-called “High Tech” USAID bridge as it leads around the east of the lagoon.
(It does NOT cross any rivers either. Further questions the need for a 14Mill$ bridge)
A nice alternative, saving time and much more appealing than the slow transit thru PottuVille.
