#54 Shashni Beach Resort

#54 Shashni (sign)#54 Shashni Beach Resort is an interesting, 2006 creation.
The strip of land just South of #50 SVH has been used by Tangalle resident Mr. Sudumathia (“The White Guy”) for many years as a fish packing centre. The Ceylon Fishing Corporation operated an ice crushing plant next door. Daily, fish was transported to the main market in Colombo in cool trucks; later a regular bus service AbaY-Monaragala-Hikkaduwa was added to this transport only operation.
The noisy and very smelly fish business stopped rather suddenly in Dec. 2004 when the ice plant was washed away and never rebuild.
Good luck had it that suddenly many boats and engines were given away by many uncoordinated agencies, and it seemed that the former fishmonger became a proud, multiple fishing boat or -fleet owner.
Mid 2006 seen another piece of good fortune for the Sudu family. Somehow the former transport yard was cleaned up and a brand new hotel resort was constructed.

#54 Shashni (establishment)

#54 Shashni's road entrance

In ten nice, colourful bungalows and a few budget cabanas were build, adding choice and a very central location to stay in the Bay.
Neighbours are also happy, because the former business caused some conflict, because the bad smell and noise was never apprechiated by any visitor on holiday in the Bay.
#54 Shashni has only been in operation a few months, but proved itself as a popular, well positioned little resort, in the very centre of Arugambay, right next door to the also noisy SVH.

A popular figure is #54 Shashini’s own cook, Shabdeen, who gained his multiple skills in almost all surrounding guest houses at some stage.
However, not many small guest houses in Ceylon can boast to have a proper (#39)Hillton trained chef on board these days….

#51 HangLoose Hotel

#51 Hangloose (sign)#51 HangLoose Hotel was known as #51 GrassRoof Hotel for many years before it changed the name.
Muslim owned and run, #51 has always been very popular with Israeli Surfers, who felt very much at home in the former GrassRoof.
Mr. Farook, who was known to have a high, distinctive voice is the manager when he can spare time from this other jobs as local teacher in the Muslim college or his duties with the Arugam Bay Tourist Association or rubbish Collection service.

Lucky that Mr. Rasool is on hand, every day, to look after guests and frequent People’s Bank Congresses held at #51 HangLoose.

Rascal Rasool is slowly, but surely becoming another AbaY original.
Meet him one day and you you are certain to have Great Respect!
Meet him later that night: He will respect you, for sure.

#51 HangLoose offers rooms at good rates, is known for good food and nice vibes.
For the 2011 season we are informed that air conditioned rooms have also been added to the range of budget accommodation.

#47 Hawky’s

#47 Hawky's (sign)

#47 Hawky’s is not quite the same as #46 AbaY Surf shop.
But the two are connected, one is a shop, the other owns a piece of land where you may find accommodation; under construction during 2006.

#46 AbaY Surf Shop

#46 ABay Surf Shop (sign)#46 AbaY Surf Shop has been moved in 2005 to its present location.
Previously, and for many years, Hawky’ Surf Shop was located directly opposite #50 Siam View, and next door to #40 Hello Madam, Mark 2.

Hawky, real name is Mr. Hawkings, is a model of your clichee veteran Aussie surfer: From Victoria, long blond hair, has only one focus in life: That is called “Surf”.
His passion brought him to Arugam Bay many years ago; he certainly is an AbaY original.
Hawky married locally, they have an active little son called ….”Surfing” (..what did you expect..?…)
If his Tamil wife had not persisted, for years,  the family would without doubt still be here, at AbaY.

The lack of any decent school, where all kids can learn together and respect each other’s cultures and backgrounds was one great chance all the NGO’s have missed out on. None was ever constructed.
Sadly, the Hawk family decided to  relocate to Australia, a stable Country with a much better approach to recial harmony. And a proper, non-seperatist school to sent a son to.
Although the Hawks missed all the Tsunami exitement and watched it only on Aussie TV, nearly all boards were saved and  the shop reopened in a new location during 2006.
It is now run by distant relatives, but the services offered are still a direct, good  result of Hawkies expertise and detailled knowledge concerning all surf related issues.
Board repairs, rentals, local info, and maybe some budget accommodation:
This is what you can expect and find at #46 AbaY Surf Shop!

#43 Home Needs

#43 Home Needs

#43 Home Needs (sign)

#43 Home Needs is a well run, clean food and small needs shop.
Something a bit like a Sri Lankan 7/11 corner shop.
Situated right in the middle of the Bay, open until 21:00 hrs. it is perhaps the best run little shop Arugam Bay has to offer.
There are plenty of fridges and freezers and quite a few more items are stocked than in PottuVille. Many may appeal to visitors: Corn Flakes, imported sweets, sun lotions, tampons, diapers.
The hard working owner is Mr. V-Jay.
The shop was wiped off Dec/2004, but with determination and generous immediate financial assistance from the Siam View VJ managed to be the first place to re=open after the Big waves receded.
Common practice has it, that many goods are supplied on credit; a ‘tab’ is kept to ensure customer loyalty.

#43 Home Needs (establishment)

AbHa recommends, however, that visitors pay for all goods as they receive them.
This would help the cash flow of such small shops.
And avoid bad debts.

#41 Surf & Sun

#41 Surf n' Sun (sign) 1#41 Surf & Sun is the most colorful, friendly looking development.
Please visit their own, new web site:
http://thesurfnsun.com/

S & S is located roughly in the middle of the Bay, opposite #40 Hello Madam and #39 Hillton Hotel.
Run by two Sri Lankan surfers, Samman and Nuwan the entire place has a distinct surf appeal.
In front there is a surf shop, as well as a recent addition of a small Internet cafe.
Behind you will find a friendly bar with a good selection of fresh food complimented by a choice of surf related movies.

In addition to the popular, warm and homely restaurant there are a number of nice cabanas and a few pretty bungalows with upstairs living rooms.
#41 Surf & Sun has hosted a few memorable events such as a hugely successful Reggae Concert recently.
In August 2006 a very colorful and most romantic wedding took place when Samman married Minna from Sweden. The event was recorded and some photos are included in our popular gallery; see right navigation bar.

#24 (Fantasy) Way of the Bay Hotel

Way of the Bay Hotel

#24 Way of the Bay Hotel

This is a new hotel development in Arugam Bay.
Way of the Bay did not feature in last year’s walk or listing.
It now appears in place of “Nina Hotel”, for which we no longer found a sign board, in mid 2010.

Background:

Mr. Sahabdeen is a native of Arugam Bay.
His father – we think his name was Nagorthambi? – once had an old tractor ‘David Brown’ plying up and down the old dirt road of AbaY.

In the 1980′s and maybe early 90′s Sahabdeen was a waiter cum manager of popular #o1 Stardust Hotel.
He learned his excellent skills there, under the direction of Danish perfectionist Per Goodman.

For reasons unknown to this reseacher, Sahabdeen decided to move on, and abroad.

We believe he made good income in kuwait, where he formed a family and saved some money to set up this new Hotel.

Now he is back agin in the middle east, completing his contract.

The hotel itself is run by relatives, but we are informed that it can be rented or given on a long lease for anyone interested.
End 2011 update:

We believe that this estblishment has now been leased / rented out  and is run by others.

They have renamed the place “Fantasy Way of the Bay Hotel” .
We are not at all sure what that implies:
It’s up to you to come, find out and let us know in YOUR feed – back!

Please contact Sahabdeen on his personal e-mail as below:

#20 Aloha Cabanas

Road Signs

Road Signs

#20 Aloha Cabanas are situated in the middle of the Bay at Arugam.
Apart from a strong surfing connection, his reclusive development might better be described as #20 Amish Cabanas. You will find no grass skirted Hawaii beauties or all night parties here, and of course no loud music, but a romantic resort, well constructed and maintained, of conservative, all natural materials.
Men might be sporting straw hats and ladies are seen in a long and modest dress.
#20 Aloha is highly popular with Christian surfers, Surfing the Nation groups and others seeking a quiet, traditional vacation, be it  in a kind of time warp setting.
Formerly owned by popular Alwin of Austria, the large piece of land was sold to reclusive Swiss surfer Thomas and managed by local counterpart Johnson until the latter married and moved to Switzerland. Many guests might be speaking with a German kind of accent, shunning technology and progress by upholding traditional values.

Entrance into #20 Aloha Cabanas

Low lighting, brilliant and well constructed cabanas, lockable chests, lookout balconies, a huge crater-type well, a quality surf shop and the odd camp fire are to be found within the walled compound to the extend that guests feel they are in Arugam Bay all alone, in a setting before the Bay was hit by progress such as mains power and other high tech. innovations.

If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, romantic holiday with a feeling of times gone by, Aloha is ideal for you.

There is a direct access to the beach and a good view towards distant surf point.
