Sri Lankan surfers to get wildcards into

arugam.info's webmistress has been asked to publish this press release. Next time the boys will supply their own photo material, to make any new post more attractive.....;-)

The Surfing Sri Lanka movement recently created by the new Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka received a major boost today when it was confirmed by the ASP that 2 local Sri Lankan surfers will benefit from wildcard entries into the first major Association of Surfing Professionals international tour event to ever be staged in the country’s history.

The 6 Star WQS Sri Lankan Airlines Pro to be held on Sri Lanka’s east coast at the world famous Arugam Bay between 16 – 24 June will now see some local surfers strutting their stuff amongst the world’s best contenders on the WQS circuit. Two Sri Lankan surfers will gain entry to the elite event as part of the ASP’s strategy to assist and promote local surfing at a variety of surfing locations worldwide.

It is proposed that the Surfing Sri Lanka Trials event will be conducted the day prior to the main ASP event start in order to select 8 local surfers who will then surf-off in two x 4 man elimination heats. The first and second place-getters of each elimination heat will then advance to Continue reading ‘Arugambay’s Surf Club’s 1st Press release’

A safe, heavenly Haven: Arugam Bay

All is quiet and peaceful on the Eastern Front, we are happy to confirm.
Arugam.info is totally neutral and will always remain stricly non-political.
We are however committed to publish any relevant article, which our semi-automatic system detects somewhere on the wide Internet, whenever the word “Arugam” is mentioned.
History will be made in just two days time.
So safety and security is very relevant.

Too young to vote. But this boy knows that his motherland is going through exiting, decisive times

The best will emerge as a winner.
In this context, the article below is political, but also  relevant. Because it addresses the mood in and around Arugam Bay and on its approach roads.

Relevant, because some fear violence after the election; there might be a bad looser around and suporters may be very disappointed.
As far as we can judge, there is no danger at all in and around Arugam Bay.
As a resort, we are happy to recommend a short, safe holiday break aways from possible trouble elsewhere in the aftermath of the vote count.

Here is Nirmala’s personal assessment of the mood around our Bay:

History:
It is believed to be the only guitar which has survived the onslaught of the devastating Tsunami, which hit Arugam Bay with full force end 2004.
Locals say it belonged to a famous person who died at #01 Stardust, Arugam Bay on 26th December, 2004
His body was never found, although a huge sum was spent to locate him by the Oprah Winfrey show. Arugam.info reported at the time, when US Marines came to search for his body. (And totally ignored the plight of the suffering locals) Continue reading ‘The Arugam Stratocaster Story’

Security update

National and International News are buzzing with reports that the STF have found a group suspected of attacks, mainly around Buttala and south of Panama.
Locally, however, a STB bus accident with an equal loss of life at the 10 mile post would have caused more talking points, concern and disruption to the public at large.
Arugam.info is happy to assure everyone that at NO point security to the public, visitors and travelers was endangered.
Indeed, a team from SunTel arrived in the Bay on Friday morning, and they left via Lahugala in their van towards Colombo later that day.
They did not notice anything at all!
Read more, see the local news as we see it: From the Internet. Beware of the photos.

Short cut to Arugam Bay

Short cut to Arugam Bay

The above photo was taken on the road between Lahugala ending up in the middle of Arugam Bay. This road totally avoids PottuVille town and does NOT cross the new so-called “High Tech” USAID bridge as it leads around the east of the lagoon.
(It does NOT cross any rivers either. Further questions the need for a 14Mill$ bridge)
A nice alternative, saving time and much more appealing than the slow transit thru PottuVille.

#70 Surf Point Cafe

#70 Upali’s Surf Cafe is the nearest place to famous Surf Point.

#70 Upali Surf Point Cafe

Right behind a huge sand dune, looking across to the Northern End of Arugam Bay.
This great place is more a way of life, than a commercial enterprise.

It certainly is situated right as a jewel in the crown of Arugam Bay; right on the tip of the peninsular.

A brief background:

This small family run Cafe offers not much more than a few local drinks, like milk tea, fruit juices and the odd Jaffle.
There is no accommodation to speak of, the first and proper shower, outdoors, is nearing completion late 2008 – after years of ‘Construction’.
Not so easy, as it may seem: There is no electricity installed so far.
And the few donated generators and not present, for whatever reasons.

There are two main characters associated with #70, and that is certainly what they are:

1.) Mr. “V.J.”
Known for his distinctive way of expression and his Super motorbike
2.) Mr. Richard
Known to be an excellent masseur. He has learned his skill from a Japanese friend it is said

Brief History:
A family run business, on the same spot for many years.
There is a sad story from long time ago associated with #70 Surf Cafe; the case remains open
More recently, the Forrest Department as well as the CCD (Coast Conservation Dept.) have planted some markers around this prime spot. Suspicions run high that authorities are planning a sort of top class hotel nearby…….
