West Java Surfer Rips To ISC Tour Victory

Cimaja, Indonesia. Dede Suryana’s hometown in West Java finally saw first-hand the true skill level of its native son.

Having competed abroad most of the year, the 26-year-old surfer produced a dazzling array of moves to win the West Java Open in his hometown of Cimaja on Sunday.

It was Dede’s first victory in the 2010 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

“I’m so happy right now, this is the best thing ever. To win this event in front of my family and friends, it’s like a dream come true,” Dede said on the ISC Web site.

“I’ve been all over the world, competing in WQS [World Qualifying Series] events lately. To come back home where everyone is, that’s something super special.”

Dede, the ISC Tour champion in 2008, clinched the West Java title and the Rp 12.5 million ($1,400) top purse after he beat Pepen Henrik 14.75-13.9 in the 25-minute final that saw the two surfers exchange aggressive maneuvers and breathtaking techniques.

Raditya Rondi, the winner of the third ISC Tour series in Kuta, Bali last month, and Dedi Dwi Santoso ended up tied for third place in the tournament supported by Quicksilver.

The last time Dede competed in a local event was during the ISC Tour opener in Canggu, Bali, in April.

The weeks Sri Lanka Champion of Champions Surf Contest saw two new champions, some great weather and perfect conditions. UK Pro Surf Tour Champion Alan Stokes from Newquay and Welsh Champion Beth Mason showed stunning form in 3 to 4 ft conditions to take the top spots on the podium at one of the year’s most prestigious contests.

Water sports crucial to attract tourists: Thilak Weerasinghe

Last week during the country’s first major international surfing event at Arugam Bay, an energetic figure could be seen enthusiastically mingling with the event’s officials and spectators. Some whom he spoke to perhaps did not know that the man smiling warmly at them was not only one of the main proponents for the development of water sports in the country but is also hailed as Sri Lanka’s most successful wind surfer.

Thilak Weerasinghe

Throughout the eighties and into the early nineties, Thilak Weerasinghe was a force to be reckoned with in the local and international wind surfing arena. He competed in and dominated events staged in places like Trincomalee, Beruwela and Mount Lavinia and further reinforced his dominance by shining in countries like Germany, Singapore, Holland, France, Belgium and the Maldives. According to Thilak his most memorable and outstanding showing came in an event in Feman, Germany in the mid eighties.

“I think I really surfed well there and that was probably my best ever performance. I won the event and beat out several of the world’s leading wind surfers,” Thilak reveals. Thilak took to the water at a very early age, becoming part of the Life Saving Club at Kinross when he was still a teenager. Then, while in Trincomalee, he discovered the sport that was to shape his life for the next several years.

“It was a new sport to both me and Sri Lanka and I was very excited to learn it. Then gradually I started getting better at it,” Thilak explains. In fact Thilak got so good that he not only started winning tournaments but also earned a scholarship from the German Embassy to travel there and be taught the finer points of the sport. Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 July, 2010 : – - The heat is rising and the swell is pumping for the start of the Sri Lanka Champion of Champions Surf Contest at Arugam Bay. Today the contest kicked off with some great surfing by the local Sri Lankan talent from Arugam Bay and Hikkaduwa, who spent the day fighting it out all the way to the semi finals.

The highest scoring wave of the day was from none other than the man who actually lives on the point, Asanka Sanjey. Who got a nine point wave with a double hand grab air, in the first heat. Asanka went on to make it into the finals alongside Kavinthirian, Santharuwan and Milan all from Arugam Bay. The Local, Open and Women’s final will all be held on Sunday 4th July.

The top ten surfers from the local division have been drawn into the line up for tomorrow’s first and second heat of the Open. Which will see them fighting for the title up against UK’s top surfers such as Oli Adams, Reubyn Ash, Alan Stokes and Johnny Fryer.

The UK Pro Surf Tour has announced it will be returning to Sri Lanka in July this year for the “Sri Lanka Champion of Champions Surf Contest” at Arugam Bay. Renowned as one of the best ‘point breaks’ in the world, Arugam Bay on the East coast of Sri Lanka. It is now a hotspot in the surfing calendar and is accessible as a result of the recent end to the civil unrest in the country.

The 2010 Championships will see top surfers fighting it out to become the ultimate champion including some of UK’s top professional surfers, international stars and local Sri Lankan surfers.

Kuta-Bali — 2008 Coca-Cola ISC Pro Surfing Champion Dede Suryana from West Java is making big news with an impressive display of radical surfing at the 6 Star ASP World Tour SriLanakan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka.

Suryana hails from the small coastal town of Cimaja in West Java, about 5 hours drive away from Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta, but considers Bali as his second home as he spends a lot of time here surfing and competing.

After his first round heat win (Round of 96), Suryana was elated with his result. He favorably compared the Arugam Bay wave to his hometown break of Cimaja where he first learned to surf saying
“the wave is really good here, like Cimaja but longer and even more rippable for turns.”

After winning the first heat, he went on to place second in the second round and then further impressed the media team that is reporting the event by winning his third round heat, scoring a total of 15.03 points for his top two waves, a score bested only by Australian wunderkind Julian Wilson who racked up a 15.60 (out of a possible 20 points).

Yet another splendid day of surfing in sweltering heat on Sri Lanka’s lush south east coastline with the round of 24 completed and now just 16 surfers remain in the Association of Surfing Professionals 6-star rated SriLankan Airlines Pro.

Indonesia’s Dede Suryana was again in outstanding form and the 24 year-old west Javanese surfer is enthusiastic about his chances here.

THEY have performed admirably so far but there is still a long way to go for the Sunshine Coast’s hopefuls at the Sri Lankan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay.

Julian Wilson, Chris Friend and Mitch Coleborn have progressed to the round of 24 at the Six Star ASP World Tour event.

Twin Waters’ Friend will face Maroochydore’s Coleborn in the first heat of the round today, while Coolum’s Wilson will attempt to progress to the round of 16 later today.

Wilson said he was ecstatic to progress so far into the event, his first major competition since overcoming an ankle injury.

“What a place for a contest” : Arugam Bay !

Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay: Fantastic conditions at Arugam Bay for day three of the Association of Surfing Professionals six-star rated SriLankan Airlines Pro.

A slight drop in swell with waves at 3 to 5 feet (1.5m) but perfectly angled on this incredible point break set-up saw the world’s top surfers shredding the long clean perfect waves as round two was completed and the field is now down to the final 24 surfers.

Number one seed Drew Courtney summed up the feeling of all the surfers competing here after advancing through his heat.

“What a place for a contest,” exclaimed Courtney.

The waves line-up superbly on this point and it’s like a machine peeling through with section after section standing up and allowing major moves – I love the place – the people, the wild-life, everything about Sri Lanka” added Courtney.

SriLankan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay set to begin tomorrow with Sri Lankan wild-cards decided

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 June, 2010 : – - Day one of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-star rated SriLankan Airlines Pro at Arugam Bay was officially placed on-hold as contest organizers await an expected good pulse in swell tomorrow to begin the first ever ASP event in Sri Lanka.

The consistent 1m (3 to 4 feet) clean surf that greeted the opening day was certainly good for surfing but with bigger waves forecast in the coming days along with an extremely favourable forecast for surf in the coming week organizers are keen to run the event in the very best and biggest surf and expect to be off and running first thing tomorrow morning.

“It’s very contestable out there today but both myself and ASP Head Judge Richie Porta agree that with better waves likely tomorrow we’re keen to begin this special event on a real high” said contest director Dane Jordan.

“It’s also a great opportunity for us to run the trials final this morning and then let all the competitors really free surf the waves today and further familiarize themselves with the point break here and be primed for an excellent start.”

An opening ceremony was enjoyed by all surfers at the famous point this morning and shortly after eight of Sri Lanka’s finest surfers competed for two prized wild-card positions into the event. The standard of the Sri Lankan boys surprised many of the media and officials at this event but not head judge Richard Porta who has visited the break on a number of occasions over the past 18 months.

“ Our international panel of ASP judges judged their final today and there were some legitimate 6 point rides in the mix of scores so that gives you an idea that they know how to perform – tomorrows heats will be exciting for all” added Porta.

Local restaurateur Asanka along with fellow Arugam Bay surfer Milan were the winners of the two sponsored wild-cards into the event while a number of other Sri Lankan surfers have taken positions into round one heats.

The free surfing performances have been spectacular and the wave looks to be living up to it’s reputation as a superb performance break. All is ready to begin, internet facilities are in-place and we expect to beam out a super quality webcast from this tropical paradise remote location.
