Championships (UKPSA) was an event that showcased the surfing location to surfers from all over the world. a??Hats offa?? to the UK Pro Surf Organisation for their decision to hold the event in Arugambay, a decision based on the quality of the surf and the charm of the location. Arugambay was embedded in the memory of these surfing enthusiasts since their last visit and it was that memory that made them determined to get back there as soon as possible. Well done! There is talk of this surfing championship becoming an annual event.

A brief scan of some pro surfing websites indicate that Arugambay is fondly called a??a-baya?? by the surfing community, and is reportedly one of the ten top surfing locations in the world with well documented 5 to 6 footer waves and a 400 metre a??ridea??. The relatively isolated rural location, balmy tropical weather, spectacular sunrises, great sea food and budget accommodation makes this place the free spirited surfers dream. Apart from attracting international surfing enthusiasts Arugambay has produced some excellent local surfers and their skill on the boards often match some of the visitors. Local skills were also on display at the UKPSA Championships in July attracting praise from the pro surfers. Pottuvil Point, a few kilometres north of Arugambay is also hailed as a great surfing point- with some great 6 footer waves and about an 800 metre ride.

There are plans to introduce night surfing and plans are also afoot to schedule more international surfing championships. A little over three hundred kilometres from Colombo the charming fishing village of Arugambay is an idyllic surfing location, with a superb stretch of beach. A very popular holiday destination for many people from Colombo too. Quite a few holiday homes dot the beach in Arugambay and Pottuvil. Some of these are available for short term holiday rental. Arugambay is a few kilometres from theA? Lahugala National Park (famous for its herds of elephants), the fishing and surfing village ofA? Purchase torsemide Pottuvil and TheA? Kumana Bird Sanctuary. These easily accessed a??attractionsa?? make Arugambay a location for more than just the surfing enthusiast. As the rapid development and commerce of the East Coast rolls on, there is scope for some great investment opportunities in Arugambay and Pottuvil. A place to be marked as a a??must go locationa?? in anyonea??s travel diary.
