The weather at Arugam Bay is much more moderate, but DEMIRA (German Mine Clearer’s) have been impressed with an innovative, cheap method of roof insulation.
When they were active in the Bay, DEMIRA staff documented this Eco-friendly idea:

Problem:
1.) Far too many PVC waste bottles are everywhere
2.) Ceilings & roofs heat up as there is no insulation
3.) There is no “Rockwool” or Fibreglass material available in S.L. - also it’s far too costly
Solution:
Each bottle acts as a self-contained double glazing unit @4″ x 4″
Highly effective - and as good as FREE!
Also totally Rodent proof!
Result:
1.) A cleaner Bay!
2.) Cool rooms at very little extra cost
3.) Heat kept out. Building and rooms stay Cool!
In the tropics people face the opposite.
In cool Countries one needs to keep the cold out. Everyone insulates buildings these days. Insulation still is not at all common in Sri Lanka.
