Remote Arugam Bay is probably the safest place in Sri Lanka these days.
We can offer plenty of wild Life, but no Tigers, and of course there is no realistic chance or reason for bomb blasts or mines.
The only danger visitors might encounter is on the approach road, the 320km A4 from Colombo. The beautiful, bumpy trip takes you through some of the best Countryside the island can offer.
But please take extra care when passing Lahugala Elephant park on the famous A4:
The friendly people of the Bay don’t want this, above, to happen to you!
And we want you and your van to arrive in good shape.
If you see Mr. Maximus in the middle of the road:
Give them respect, back up and wait for them to disappear into the Jungle.
At least please stop and collect their droppings to be posted to the BBC or the dung paper factory

February 26th update:
Returning from Ella to Arugambay we encountered the common sight of a lone, female elephant playing with traffic just in front of the huge ‘Lahugala National Park’ poster. For years this has been a common event and is harmless fun.
However, passing the Lahugala STF camp by 1km towards PottuVille, an angry Tusker blocked our path at around 21:00 hrs. We gave respect, backed up a little. Looking left, in the paddy field next to our van was a herd of about 25 animals, who trumpeted loudly protecting their calfs. The tusker became irritated and the herd uneasy.
As our way was blocked in both directions we just had to turn off the lights and watched the situation. After about 15 Minutes all was well and we were allowed to proceed.
This situation is rather unusual and our local expert suspects that wild life is somewhat confused due to miles of fresh high voltage fence in the area.
For the time being we recommend to approach Arugam Bay in daylight hours if possible.

The other, harmless photo was taken in daylight for the same purpose, as no camera was at hand during night events.

Concerning the picture:
Revenge for the dead Cross Tusker?

Who the hell put the chain around this “wild Lahugala Tusker” on your photo *ROTFL*
You are correct Moni. This photo was taken in Galle.
The problem is that we don’t seem to have a camera handy when it happens here.
Also, the few shots we have taken at night simply didn’t come out well enough to publish.
It was therefore decided to add a few library photos to show what could happen.
We have changed the text slightly following your very welcome comment.
