Die drei Gestalten, die da Mitte Juni von der Polizei aus dem Meer an
Sri Lankas Westküste gefischt wurden, ließen nichts Gutes erahnen. In Taucheranzügen und mit Zyanid-Kapseln ausgestattet, wie sie die Rebellen der Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) zumeist mit sich führen, hatten sie sich vermutlich für einen Selbstmord-Anschlag heran gepirscht. Vielleicht sogar auf den nur rund zehn Kilometer entfernten Flughafen der Hauptstadt Colombo - wie es schon einmal im Jahr 2001 geschehen war: Damals hatten die Tamilen in einer spektakulären Aktion etliche Flugzeuge in die Luft gesprengt und den für die Insel wichtigen Tourismus fast zum Erliegen gebracht. Doch allein schon die brutalen Attentate, Bombardements und Seegefechte der letzten Wochen, die den 2002 mit der Regierung geschlossenen Waffenstillstand zur Makulatur werden ließen, wären geeignet, den Besucherstrom in das einstige Ceylon halbwegs versiegen zu lassen. Doch genau das Gegenteil ist der Fall.

Die offizielle Besucher-Statistik weist bis Ende Mai die Einreise von 253.136 Ausländern aus, was im Vergleich zum Vorjahres-Zeitraum einem Zuwachs von 21,5 Prozent entspricht. Darunter lassen sich mit über 30.000 Besuchern überraschender Weise sogar auch fast 50 Prozent mehr deutschsprachige Urlauber finden. Die positive Bilanz dürfte sich nicht zuletzt darauf zurückführen lassen, dass die touristisch relevanten Urlaubsziele - wie die West- und Südküste mit ihren endlos langen Badestränden oder auch die wichtigsten, kulturhistorischen Sehenswürdigkeiten im Landesinneren - fast sämtlichst außerhalb des Tamilen-Gebiets liegen. Aber auch darauf, dass westliche Touristen bisher noch nie ein direktes Ziel von Anschlägen geworden sind. „Trotz aller Grausamkeit sind die Rebellen der LTTE touristenfreundlich, wie es schon in der Vergangenheit ihr modus operandi gewesen ist“, erläutert Hiran Coorey von der Reise-Agentur „Jetwing“, die zu den führenden des Landes gehört. „Wir sind mit der Buchungslage sehr zufrieden und freuen uns, dass uns die Touristen nicht im Stich lassen.“

Der positive Trend wird von deutschen Reiseveranstaltern bestätigt. „Der Ausbruch der Gewalt hat bisher keine spürbaren Auswirkungen mit sich gebracht“, betont zum Beispiel Petra Hartmann vom Münchner Veranstalter „FTI - Frosch Touristik“. „Die Insel zählt sogar zu unseren Verkaufs-Rennern im aktuellen Sommerprogramm.“ Besonders gut nachgefragt seien die Angebote für Ayurveda- und Rundreisen. Sogar der Groß-Veranstalter TUI freut sich hinsichtlich des Tropenziels Sri Lanka über Zuwächse. „Ich bin selbst erstaunt“, sagt Pressesprecherin Sylvia Einsle, „dass unsere Buchungseingänge für Sri Lanka trotz der schrecklichen Nachrichten über dem Niveau des vergangenen Jahres liegen und sogar über dem des guten Touristenjahres 2004.“ Immerhin präsentiere sich ja auch so mancher Strand heute sogar noch schöner als vor der Tsunami-Katastrophe, während die Hotels ihren Standard beim Wiederaufbau erheblich verbessert hätten.

Zu den Erklärungen für die Treue der Touristen zählt, dass sich Sri Lanka traditionell über einen großen Kreis von Wiederholern freuen kann, die das Land gut kennen - und sich nicht durch Negativ-Schlagzeilen abschrecken lassen. Doch auch die Reise-Hinweise des Auswärtigen Amtes, die trotz der seit Jahresbeginn über 700 Todesopfer relativ moderat geblieben sind, dürften dazu beitragen: Derzeit rät es lediglich von Reisen in die nördlichen, östlichen und südöstlichen Landesteile ab (www.auswaertiges-amt.de). Generell gemieden werden sollten allerdings die Tamilen-Städte Jaffna, Trincomalee und Batticaloa, die jedoch ohnehin nur über eine geringe, touristische Infrastruktur verfügen. Voll im Betrieb befinden sich die Randgebiete der Krisen-Provinzen - wie der Yala-Nationalpark als größter und beliebtester des Landes. Oder auch das entlegene Bade- und Surfer-Paradies Arugam-Bay an der zumeist von Tamilen bewohnten Ostküste: Es kann mit sagenhaften, statistischen 330 Sonnentagen pro Jahr aufwarten und braucht nun - als eines der am schlimmsten vom Tsunami betroffenen Urlaubsziele Sri Lankas - jeden einzelnen Touristen, um den gewaltigen Anstrengungen des Wiederaufbaus irgendeinen Sinn zu geben…
